Obituary of Mr FAA Jasdanwala, Doyen of Indian Foundry Industry
With deep regret we mourn the sad demise of Mr. Faiz A. A. Jasdanwalla, Past President of The Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF) in Mumbai, on 06.04.2010.
Highly respected for his profound knowledge of metallurgy and foundry sector combined with excellent oratorical skills, Jasdanwalla was a public figure in his own right. A pioneer of many firsts in the professional and social life, he combined his keen enthusiasm for knowledge and love of sports with unfailing courtesy and an insatiable desire of lending a helping hand to others.
Jasdanwalla was born on 13th July, 1924. After completing his B.Sc. (Hons) from the St. Xaviers College, Mumbai, he went to Claire College under the University of Cambridge from where he did his natural sciences Tripos in Metallurgy and obtained a Master Degree in the subject.
A keen sports enthusiast, he represented St. Xavier’s College in the Inter-Collegiate Cricket Tournament with key players like K C Ebrahim, Rusi Cooper, Rusi Mody, Poly Umrigar & P K Kamat. While at Cambridge, he captained Clare College in Cricket and Table Tennis.
In 1945-46 while at the University of Cambridge, Jasdanwalla flew for the Royal Airforce as a pilot and was a member of the University Air Squadron. After returning to India, in 1952, he had the distinction of being amongst the eight selected to form the first Auxiliary Air Squadron of the then Bombay.
Thereafter, he joined The Indian Standard Metal Co. Ltd. (ISM), a Non-Ferrous Metal Foundry, as a Works Metallurgist becoming later the Works Manager and thereafter eventually the Managing Director.
A Pioneer in gravity die-casting and later on pressure die-casting, ISM manufactured die-cast components such as fuse bodies for land mines for the Defence Department. Jasdanwalla also worked on evolving procedure for chemical testing for impurities of lead and cadmium in zinc based die-casting alloys and studied the inter-granular corrosion of zinc based die-casting alloys.
As an industry leader, Jasdanwalla was the Founder, Fellow Member and President of a number of Professional Institutions and Industry Associations such as:

LTD.; BULLOWS INDIA PVT. LTD., RICHARDSON & CRUDDAS etc.
He was also a Director of the Central Board of the STATE BANK OF INDIA as well as a member of its Executive Committee in Mumbai.
Despite a major orthopaedic surgery, he was kind enough to accede to the request to inaugurate the “IIF Center”, presently housing the national headquarters of The Institute of Indian Foundrymen, during the Indian Foundry Congress at Kolkata in January 1999.
Jasdanwalla felt the need for setting up of a library for the dissemination of knowledge to the foundry fraternity. The F.A.A. Jasdanwalla Library, which was later set up at IIF Center, Kolkata, is a glowing testimony of his active interest and patronage. He not only generously contributed a large sum of money for the setting up of the library but also donated rare technical books from his personal collection for the benefit of foundrymen.
A humanist to the core of his heart, Jasdanwalla also held the apex position in a large number of Sports Bodies as well as Social Welfare organizations as:

The passing away of F.A.A. Jasdanwalla has left a deep void which will be difficult to fulfill. Fondly known by his first name as Faiz amongst his friends and colleagues, he will always be remembered for his rare human touch in spite of his towering personality.
